Abstract

Abstract Background and objectives: In this research, the formation of chitosan-TiO2 nanocomposite and its antibacterial effect on Escherichia coli and staphylococcus aureus was investigated Material and Methods: to study the results, we used Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transition electron microscopy (TEM) images, infrared (IR) spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible. Optical Density (OD) was also measured by spectrophotometer then the effect of this nano composite, in the vicinity of aforementioned bacteria, on the sterilized gauze in solid Muller Hinton Agar and TSB liquid mediums was assessed Results: The mentioned nanocomposite was formed with the composition of 4mg/ml Chitosan concentration and 2% titanium dioxide concentration. Finally, we observed that this nanocomposite near 100% could prevent bacterial growth and in the presence of this material did not grow any bacteria. Conclusion: chitosan-Tio2 Nanocomposite can be useful on culture medium and sterilized gauze to control pathologic bacteria. Abstract

Abstract Background and Objective: Laboratory personnel have always accidental exposure to clinical samples, which can cause the transmission of infection. This threat can be prevented and controlled by education for the use of safety instruments. The purpose was to determine the frequency of accidental exposure to laboratory samples among Yazd laboratory personnel in 2011. Material and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 of Yazd clinical laboratory personnel. The data was collected, using a valid and reliable questioner, via interview and analyzed by means of SPSS software. Results: Eighty-six percent of the subjects reported an experience of accidental exposure to clinical samples, such as blood, serum and urine. The causes were carelessness (41%) and work overload (29%). Needle- stick was the most prevalent injury (52%) particularly in sampler workers (51%) and in their hands (69%). There wasn’t significant relationship between accidental exposure to laboratory samples and the variables such as private and governmental laboratories (p=0.517), kind of employment (p=0.411), record of services (p=0.439) and academic degree (p=0.454). The subjects aged 20-29 (p=0.034) and worked in sampling unit had the highest accidental exposure. Conclusion: Based on the results, inexperience of the personnel especially in sampling room, overload at work and ignorance of applying safety instruments are known as the most important reasons for accidental exposure to clinical samples. Abstract

Abstract Background and Objective: Vancomycin is used for treatment of methicillin-resistant S. Aureus (MRSA) infections therefore, resistance to this antibiotic is increasing. We aimed to determine the antibiotic resistance pattern and frequency of vancomycin resistant S. Areas (VRSA) strains isolated from clinical samples. Material and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 100 S. Aureus isolates collected from hospitals in Shiraz during six months, 2012, were identified by biochemical, microbiological and molecular methods. After determination of antibiotic susceptibility pattern by disc diffusion method and vancomycin agar screening test, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was determined by E-test for vancomycin, thicoplanin, linezolid and quinupristin-dalfopristin. Results: The most resistant and the most sensitive antibiotic were ampicillin (%95) and quinupristin-dalfopristin (99%), respectively, and 44% of isolates were resistant to methicillin. In agar screening test, 48% of strains had reduced sensitivity and in disc diffusion 3% strains were resistant to vancomycin. In E-test method, only one isolate was resistant to vancomycin. Conclusion: given the presence of VRSA and new antibiotic resistant strains, we recommend doing some intervention to prevent from spreading these strains in hospitals. . Abstract

ABSTRACT
            Background and objectives: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. This study examined the effects of cardiac rehabilitation exercise on lipid profile and expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-α) gene in patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting.
           Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, after screening, patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) were randomly divided into an experimental group (n=12) and a control group (n=12). After the surgery and discharge from hospital, the experimental group performed rehabilitation exercise for two months, while the control group did not perform any exercise after discharge from the hospital and the initial phase of rehabilitation. Fasting blood samples were collected before and after the last training session to evaluate biochemical variables and PPAR-α gene expression of lymphocytes. PPAR-α expression level was assessed by qRT-PCR. Statistical analysis was done in the SPSS software (version 20) using repeated measures.
            Results: In the follow-up after the two-month cardiac rehabilitation exercise, the PPAR-α gene was significantly overexpressed and plasma HDL levels increased significantly in the training group compared with the control group (P<0.05). Although the concentrations of LDL and triglycerides decreased in the experimental group, this reduction was not statistically significant (P>0.05).
            Conclusion: The results indicate that the protocols carried out in the study could be utilized for improving HDL levels and cardiovascular function in CABG patients.
